A rare opportunity to hear the entire cycle of Biber’s sublime masterpiece, performed over 3 evenings around Easter, played on Baroque instruments by Anne Loeser, violin; Jane Young, cello and Bethany Angus, harpsichord and organ.
Heinrich Biber’s Rosary Sonatas are the pinnacle of 17th-century violin writing. Composed for use in Christian worship, they commemorate events around Jesus Christ’s life as celebrated in the Catholic Church. Regardless of your religious leanings, they make for an extraordinary spiritual experience.
Undiscovered for 200 years, these sonatas make extensive use of scordatura, the technique of re-tuning the strings of the violin to unusual combinations, even, in one instance, crossing the strings over!
